Upcycling Architecture, Torino
Organised within the PRIN project Upcycling Architecture in Italy: Forging and Promoting a Renewed Building Culture, the conference at the Politecnico di Torino explored European construction culture since WWII through the lens of material reuse and brought together varied perspectives on upcycling architecture and Design for Disassembly (DfD). Upcycling was framed as a distinct architectural approach centered on the critical reuse of building materials and contributions were organised into three sessions on history, theory, and practice, addressing alternative post-war building cultures, evolving definitions of upcycling, and present-day challenges including regulations and practices.
Simon Mitchell presented the paper «From Improvisation to Infrastructure» and reflected on the complications and controversies of upcycling as a distinctly peripheral and opportune practice becoming professionalised within regimes of architectural reuse.
